“Lateral Entry” refers to a process through which individuals with prior academic qualifications or work experience are admitted into a higher level of education or employment, bypassing some of the traditional entry requirements. In the context of education, lateral entry programs allow students to join a degree program at an advanced stage rather than starting from the beginning. 

  1. Higher Education: In higher education, lateral entry programs are commonly offered in technical and professional fields such as engineering, computer science, and management. Instead of completing the entire duration of a degree program, students with relevant diplomas or associate degrees can enter directly into the later stages of a bachelor’s degree program. For example, in engineering colleges, lateral entry allows diploma holders to join the second or third year of a B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology) program.
  2. Diploma to Degree Programs: Lateral entry is often used to facilitate the transition from diploma or vocational programs to undergraduate degree programs. Students who have completed a diploma or vocational course in a related field can enter directly into the higher levels of a degree program, receiving credit for the courses they have already completed.
  3. Work Experience: In some cases, lateral entry may also be based on relevant work experience rather than academic qualifications alone. Professionals with significant industry experience may be eligible for advanced standing or exemptions from certain courses when entering a degree program.
